A 40 by 30 ft footprint under a 4/12 pitch roof carries about 1,265 square feet of roofing, or 12.6 squares, which is 42 shingle bundles with 10 percent waste.

Actual roof area = footprint area × a pitch multiplier that accounts for the slope. A flat 0/12 roof has a multiplier of 1.0; a steep 12/12 roof is about 1.414. We divide the sloped area by 100 ft² to get roofing squares, the unit roofers order in. Shingles come 3 bundles per square, so bundles = squares × 3 × (1 + waste), rounded up.

One roofing square equals 100 ft² of roof surface, and most shingles run 3 bundles to the square. So a roof that measures 24 squares takes 72 bundles before waste, and a little more once you add the cushion for cuts.
The safe way is from the ground. Measure the building footprint, length times width, then multiply by the pitch multiplier for the slope. You do not have to climb up to find the slope: set a level flat against the roofline and measure how far the roof drops over 12 horizontal inches. A drop of 6 inches is a 6/12 pitch. For a roof with hips, valleys, dormers or a separate garage wing, measure each plane on its own and add the areas before converting to squares.
Take a simple gable over a 40 by 30 footprint. That is 1,200 ft² on the ground. At a 6/12 pitch the multiplier is about 1.118, so the actual roof surface is roughly 1,342 ft², or 13.4 squares. Three bundles per square puts you at about 40 bundles. Add a 10% waste factor for a clean gable and you order 45 bundles. Bump that toward 15% if the roof is cut up with valleys and penetrations.

Ordering off the footprint is the big one. Floor area and roof area are not the same number once there is any slope, and the steeper the roof the wider the gap. The other miss is underbuying waste. Starter strip, ridge caps, and the trimmed pieces at hips and valleys all come out of your bundle count, so 10% to 15% is not padding, it is the job. Buy bundles from the same production lot when you can, since color can drift between runs.
