How it works

Multiply room length by room width to get net area. Multiply by (1 + waste percentage / 100) to get the amount to order, which covers cuts at walls, transitions, and any damaged pieces. Multiply the order area by price per square foot for the material cost estimate.

Formula: Area = Length x Width. Order area = Area x (1 + Waste% / 100). Cost = Order area x Price per sq ft. Add 10% waste for straight layouts, 15% for diagonal patterns.

FAQs

How do I calculate how much flooring I will need?

Measure each room's length and width in feet and multiply them to get square footage. Add all rooms together, then multiply by 1.10 to include 10% waste for cuts and defects. That is the number of square feet to order.

How much vinyl flooring do I need for a 12x12 room?

A 12 x 12 room is 144 square feet. With a 10% waste factor you should order 158.4 square feet. Round up to the nearest box size your supplier offers. Most boxes cover 20 to 25 square feet.

How much does it cost to install 1,000 square feet of flooring?

Material costs for laminate or luxury vinyl plank run $2 to $5 per square foot, hardwood $5 to $12 per square foot. Installation labor adds $2 to $5 per square foot. Total for 1,000 sq ft ranges from about $4,000 to $17,000 depending on material and region.

What is the formula for calculating flooring?

Net area = Length x Width. Order quantity = Net area x (1 + Waste fraction). For a 10% waste allowance the formula is: order quantity = length x width x 1.10. This applies to hardwood, laminate, vinyl plank, and tile flooring.
