How it works

Divide paver length by 12 and paver width by 12 to convert each to feet, then multiply them together to get the area of one paver in square feet. Divide total patio area by paver area, multiply by (1 + waste / 100), and round up to the nearest whole paver.

Formula: Paver area (sq ft) = (Paver length in x Paver width in) / 144. Pavers needed = ceil(Patio area / Paver area x (1 + Waste% / 100)).

FAQs

How many pavers do I need for a 12x10 patio?

A 12 x 10 foot patio is 120 square feet. Using a standard 8 x 4 inch paver (0.222 sq ft each) with 10% waste, you need about 594 pavers. The exact count depends on your paver size and pattern.

How many 4x8 pavers do I need per square foot?

A 4 x 8 inch paver covers 32 square inches, which is 0.222 square feet. You need about 4.5 pavers per square foot. Multiply your total square footage by 4.5 and add 10% for waste and cuts.

Do I need to add extra pavers for a pattern?

Yes. Straight running bond patterns need 10% extra. Herringbone and diagonal patterns need 15% extra due to the angle cuts at the borders. Always order at least one extra square foot worth of pavers as a future repair reserve.

How deep should a paver base be?

Most residential paver patios need 4 to 6 inches of compacted gravel base plus 1 inch of bedding sand, giving a total excavation depth of 5 to 7 inches below finish grade. Driveways typically need 6 to 8 inches of compacted base.
