How it works

Divide the room area in square feet by the area of one tile (width x length in inches, divided by 144). Multiply by (1 + waste percentage / 100) and round up to the next whole tile. A 10% waste buffer covers diagonal cuts, broken tiles, and future repairs.

Formula: Tile area (sq ft) = (Tile width in x Tile length in) / 144. Tiles needed = ceil(Room area / Tile area x (1 + Waste% / 100)).

FAQs

How do I calculate how many floor tiles I need?

Multiply room length by room width to get area in square feet. Divide by the area of one tile in square feet (tile width times tile height divided by 144). Round up and add 10% for waste.

How many 12x12 tiles do I need for a 10x10 room?

A 10 x 10 room is 100 square feet. A 12 x 12 inch tile covers exactly 1 square foot. You need 100 tiles plus 10% waste, so order at least 110 tiles.

How do I calculate tiles for a wall?

Measure wall height and width in feet to get the wall area. Subtract window and door openings. Divide by your tile area in square feet and add 10 to 15 percent for cuts around edges and fixtures.

What percentage of extra tiles should I buy?

10% extra is standard for straight layouts. Add 15% for diagonal or herringbone patterns, which produce more cut waste. Always keep a few spare tiles from the same lot for future repairs.
