How it works

Volume = area × depth (÷ 12 to convert inches to feet). We then convert to cubic yards for bulk orders (÷ 27) and to standard 2-cubic-foot bags (÷ 2).

Depth guide: 2–3″ around flowers and veggies, 3–4″ for trees and shrubs. Keep mulch off stems and trunks.

Mulch FAQs

How much mulch do I need?

Area × depth ÷ 12 = cubic feet. Divide by 27 for cubic yards, or by 2 for 2-cu-ft bags.

How deep should mulch be?

2–3″ around flowers and delicate plants, 3–4″ for trees and shrubs.

When should I apply mulch?

Late spring once soil warms, or fall before winter. Spring application holds summer moisture.

How often should I replace it?

Organic mulch lasts 1–2 years. Check annually and top up thin spots.

Bulk or bagged?

Bulk is cheaper above ~10 cubic yards; bagged is easier for small beds and storage.
